MELBOURNE DESIGN FESTIVAL,
Thursday, 5 April 2007

The third annual Melbourne Design Festival will take place from 5 -15 July, 2007 at Federation Square, along the Yarra River and venues across Melbourne. Presented by the National Design Centre, the Melbourne Design Festival will include over 40 mainly free events developed by designers for the general community to celebrate design and promote the further understanding of design across all its disciplines.

"While there are design events sprinkled throughout the year, in July during the Melbourne Design Festival, When It Rains, It Pours," said Kathy Demos, Director, National Design Centre. "This theme and interpretations of it will be reflected throughout many of the Festival events from the Australian Poster Annual to the Down to Earth exhibition on the banks of the Yarra River."

The Festival provides a flood of diverse design programs, enough to whet the appetite of any designer or anyone interested in design. Events include exhibitions, forums, design shows, workshops, a design market, competitions, installations amongst others during the 10 days of the Festival.

iMade, a major international touring show from Italy will be on exhibition in specially built pavilions on the Federation Square car park rooftop from 5 – 15 July.

In 2007, popular events return such as the PopUps program which includes up to 20 events presented by designers and design studios, galleries and design businesses across Melbourne and the Speaker Series which presents leading local and international speakers at BMW Edge, Federation Square.

The hugely successful Melbourne Design Market returns on Sunday 8 July at Federation Square’s undercover car park. Now in its fourth year, the Market will again include an excellent mix of well-known design-focused businesses, emerging designers, students and established designers across a wide range of disciplines. This year the 3rd Australian Poster Annual will take place along the banks of the Yarra River and celebrates the poster as a space for creative play.
